BMW pulled out all the stops at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed to honour the 50th anniversary of its iconic 3 Series. In a moving tribute to half a century of performance, innovation, and style, all seven generations of the world-renowned sports sedan paraded up the famous Goodwood hill. From the original E21 to the latest G20, the lineup offered a visual timeline of BMW’s evolution in engineering and design.

The showcase featured each generation in standout form, starting with the 323i E21 and culminating in the current G20 330e plug-in hybrid. It wasn’t just sedans on display either, the F31 Touring represented the sixth generation, while the high-performance M3 GTS Coupe (E92) stood in for the fifth. M-badged machines made a thunderous appearance, with the legendary E30 M3 and rare E46 CSL adding extra excitement to the already electrifying parade.

One curious inclusion was the E36/5 Compact, representing the third generation. Though not a traditional sedan, its presence served as a reminder of BMW’s experimentation within the 3 Series range. As the seven models crested the hill, the progression in size, design language, and technology over the decades became unmistakably clear. From boxy and minimalist to bold and tech-forward, each car reflected its era’s priorities and tastes.

More than 20 million 3 Series units have been sold globally, including wagons, long-wheelbase models, and pre-4 Series coupes and convertibles. With the next-generation G50 on the horizon, set to introduce a bold new design direction, BMW’s celebration at Goodwood wasn’t just a nod to the past. It was a salute to a legacy still in motion, and a thrilling glimpse of what’s yet to come.
